Living Our Values: E Pluribus Unum

Adopted at the time of the American Revolution, this latin phrase (meaning “Out of Many, One”) reflected the birth of a single nation from its original thirteen colonies. It also describes a dynamic between two key Unitarian Universalist values: pluralism and interdependence. It reminds us both of our “inherent worth and dignity” and the “interdependent web” of which we are a part — our unique individuality and the challenges, joys, and deep listening required in being part of a covenantal community.
